SBI code will change in September 2025: how to avoid surprises

In September 2025, the Chamber of Commerce (KVK) will adjust the Standard Business Classification (SBI codes). For many entrepreneurs, this is the ideal time to check whether their business activities are correctly listed in the Trade Register.

What is an SBI code?

An SBI code is a classification used by the KVK to categorize companies based on their activities. This code is relevant for statistics (CBS), among other things, but is particularly important for licensing, insurance, pension funds, and sometimes also for obtaining subsidies or financing.

Why this change?

The change in September 2025 is the result of a periodic review. The aim is to ensure that the codes better reflect current and relevant business activities. The Chamber of Commerce will automatically change the codes based on the description currently listed in the Trade Register.

Possible consequences of an incorrect code

Although an incorrect SBI code does not immediately lead to penalties, it can have significant negative consequences in some situations. Examples include:

  • Subsidies, schemes, or other financing for which your company may not be eligible.
  • An insurance policy that does not accurately reflect your actual activities.
  • Assignment to a pension fund that is not appropriate for your sector.

What can you do

  • Check the Trade Register now to see if your company description is still up to date.
  • If necessary, suggest changes so that the new code better reflects your activities.
  • After September 8, 2025, check whether the new code assigned by the Chamber of Commerce is correct and suggest changes if necessary.
