CSDDD update: postponement of sustainability rules

Previously, we wrote about the introduction of the European “anti-road viewing law” CSDDD. Subject then was specifically the consequences for (ultra) fast fashion companies. You can read that article here. It was recently announced that the European Parliament has granted a postponement for part of the sustainability legislation CSDDD .

What is the purpose of the CSDDD?

The directive, also known as the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD), aims to make companies accountable for abuses in their supply chains. For example, by identifying and preventing human rights violations and environmental damage, especially in international production chains.

Why delay?

On April 3, 2025, the European Parliament approved the European Commission’s proposal to delay the introduction of new sustainability rules for companies. These rules are part of the broader European sustainability agenda.

With a large majority, MEPs voted in favor of the postponement. Earlier, European Union member states had also indicated their agreement with the proposal. The formal decision to do so has yet to be taken.

The reasons given for the postponement include easing the regulatory burden so that the competitive position of companies in Europe is improved compared to, for example, China and the United States. However, some MEPs fear that this relief will weaken the goals to be achieved by these regulations.

What next?

The further course of the postponement depends on formal decision-making by member states. Upon a majority vote in favor of the deferral, member states will be given an additional year to transpose the CSDDD into national law. Also, the largest companies will have an additional year to ensure that they meet their obligations arising from these regulations. You can read exactly what these obligations entail in our earlier article.

The postponement offers companies temporary relief, but does not mean a reprieve. As far as can be seen now, the EU’s ambition in the field of sustainable business remains largely intact. It is therefore advisable for companies to continue to follow the developments surrounding the CSDD and to make preparations where possible. The postponement may provide additional room for practical implementation.
